Advice For High-anxiety Moments
Advice for High-Anxiety Moments
This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9
I’ll bet if you close your eyes you can almost see Joshua’s knees knocking, feel his pulse racing, watch pools of sweat form on the ground beneath his perspiring palms. No doubt, this is a high-anxiety moment he is feeling as he realizes the position God has called him to take. Now that Moses has died, Joshua has been chosen by God to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land.
Listen closely and you can probably hear him nervously muttering, “Me? Are you sure, Lord? There’s got to be someone else you could pick.”
I wonder how many of us have felt at various times like Joshua felt so long ago. My hand is in the air.
Let’s be honest. We have all been where Joshua was that day. And here’s the news flash: what happened three thousand years ago is as relevant for us as it was for Joshua. God made a promise.
The promise is that God will go with you and ahead of you across your Jordan—into all He has planned for your tomorrow. Will it be easy? Not necessarily. Will it require staying close to Him and following His direction? Yes. Will the currents take you to a place on the other side you didn’t intend to go? Maybe. But will He be with you wherever you end up? You can bet your life on it!
What’s your Jordan River you are facing today? A family illness? A career change? A personal challenge? Perhaps a relationship has gone stale and you need help freshening it up. Or maybe there’s something you know you should have done or tried long ago, and instead you’ve been sitting on the bank of the Jordan for too long, dangling your feet in the rushing waters. It’s time to jump in and make a mad dash for the other side.
God calls you to be strong and courageous, to know that He is with you.
