Adding To The Memory Bank

Adding to the Memory Bank

Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:19-20

Since my son’s death in 2005, I have talked with hundreds of parents who have lost children to accidents, illnesses, or violence. Every one of those parents, including me, wishes they could spend even just a few more minutes with their child. Life is precious, and so are moments with our children. We have to make the most of our time together.

Think about how quickly time passes. How long until the playroom is empty? When will the window of opportunity for influencing your kids start to close? How long until your children have other interests or more demands on their time that limit the opportunities you have to spend the day with them and talk about things they need to know? The Bible says that tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. You need to take advantage of today’s opportunities today.

Whatever seems important to you right now is probably less important than spending time with your kids. They grow up quickly. No one wants to look back with regret, see missed opportunities, and wonder what might have been. Everyone wants to look back and see God’s fingerprints in their lives and have wonderful memories of the people He has entrusted them to care for.

Listen to God’s gentle whisper when He tells you to enjoy the sacred moments of life. When your kids—or your spouse, relatives, or friends—ask you to spend time with them, set aside “important” business and treasure the opportunity. Be with the people who love you, and make lasting memories with them. Invest yourself and your time in the things that really matter before you end up with regrets. Those are the investments that make a difference and that can last forever. Whatever is going on in your life right now, remember what is truly important.

Uncommon Key > The memories you will have tomorrow are made today. Live now in a way that will keep you free from later regrets.
