A Lasting Gift

True godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. 1 Timothy 6:6-7

It’s not a new phrase with me, and we’ve all heard it many times before, but it makes the point clearly: you’ll never see a hearse pulling a U-Haul. Why? Because you can’t take it with you.

“You can’t take it with you” is actually a biblical truth. Okay, Paul, if I can’t take it with me, what lasts beyond myself? Memories. A legacy.

A friend of Nathan’s recently died of cancer, and in his own obituary, which he helped prepare, Rob Eubanks concluded with what he wanted his family and friends to do as they pressed on: “to care about each person with whom you come in contact, to be a friend to children, to donate bone marrow to a match, to make a person’s life better where you have the power to do so, to forgive easily, to make a choice each day to be positive, and to allow God to work through you.”

I like where he was headed with that list—thinking about others and the memories and impact you can create while you are living.

In order to leave memories with the ones you love and who love you, you have to make some. To leave memories for your spouse of your time together, you have to take time to be with your spouse. To raise your children as good and godly people who love and respect you, you have to be a viable, real, and caring part of their lives. To make a difference in the lives of your friends, your coworkers, and those in the church and wherever you find yourself, you have to take time to care. To forgive easily.

Take time to build those memories by taking time to care. Don’t take yourself too seriously, but take those around you whom you love and who love you very seriously.
