A Bold Statement

Since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. . . . So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. Hebrews 4:14, 16

Do you consider yourself a bold person? Whether you are a naturally timid person or someone who is not afraid of anything, you can come boldly before God’s throne. Boldly, the way children feel confident they can approach their father or mother—usually in a negotiation for a snack, but sometimes more (like my ten-year-old, Jordan, who recently asked me if I could advance him his allowance money so he could buy a car)—who they know loves them and can be trusted with their feelings. We can have an even greater self-assurance as we stand boldly before the God of the universe. The family starts there, and from that bold and trusting relationship—or not—all other family relationships flow.

What do you think about that? Do you feel that way in your prayer life and in your daily walk wherever that takes you? That you can approach the God of the universe as if He is your Father, your Daddy?

I’ve got to be honest with you. I believe it, but it is still a bit intimidating for me. However, I know that what Christ did for me on the cross provided me, and you, with direct access to the heavenly Father. Prior to the moment when Christ died on the cross and the Temple curtain was torn in two, the only one allowed into the “Holy of Holies,” where God resided in the Temple, was the priest. No one else had direct access to God except the priest.

But when Christ said, “It is finished” and breathed His last breath on the cross, the curtain covering the “Holy of Holies” was immediately torn in half, signifying that we now had—through Christ’s death—direct access to God the Father.

It’s still hard to fathom. But the picture of Him standing with open arms waiting for me, rather than being unapproachable behind a curtain, is a welcoming vision.

Someone said it this way: God has your picture on His refrigerator.

Father. Daddy. God.

It was how God wanted it, and it’s part of His plan for you—to have an intimate, direct relationship with Him starting now and lasting for all eternity. Your earthly family will be blessed as a result.
