Our Search Stops Here

I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself. In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Colossians 2:2-3

The Bible is a big book, and sometimes it can be difficult to locate the shorter books because they can easily get lost in the shuffle of pages.

Recently when I was looking for Colossians, I kept saying to myself, General Electric Power Company. Do you think GE knows that because of their name I can always find Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians? Those four books of the Bible are tucked in between two other “ians,” 2 Corinthians and 1 Thessalonians. These potent little letters written by the apostle Paul are tucked away in the last fourth of the Bible, and thumbing through to find them after all these years, I still think GEPC! (Maybe that tip will help you find them too.)

Once we arrive in one of these letters, we are in for some strong doses of God’s wisdom. For instance, when I am not living free in Christ, I turn to Galatians. Is there contention in the church? Ephesians. Lack of joy? Philippians. Need reminding that Christ is God and all sufficient? Look to Colossians. Of course, this is a quick summary, but it is a starting point for tackling truth from God about what really matters.

And what really matters? Rather, I should say who really matters? One reading of any of these books will give strong evidence that Jesus Christ is who matters. Everything in the Bible—from Genesis to Revelation—points to Him.

Paul reminds us of this truth in today’s verses. Our search for wisdom and knowledge stops in one place—Christ! “In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Paul was yearning for all believers to have this complete confidence.

Our personal relationship to Jesus Christ—God in the flesh, our Savior, our Everything—is the answer to God’s redemptive plan.
