Loose-end Living

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

In this busy, fast-paced world, sometimes I long for an official home holiday designated as a Loose-End-Living Day. A day to deal with

• the big water mark on the ceiling that needs painting . . .
• the hanging hem in my dress . . .
• the full gutters . . .
• the photos that need to be put in albums . . .
• the phone that’s beeping for a battery . . .
• the unmailed wedding gift.

Whew! Have I inspired you to make your own Loose-End-Living list right now? These are small-potatoes loose ends. We may be able to list some big-potatoes loose ends, too, that cannot be dealt with in a day, a month, a year, or even this side of heaven:

• a debilitating disease . . .
• a depleted bank account . . .
• an unworn wedding dress . . .
• a rebellious child.

Sometimes thinking about handling these two kinds of lists forces me to focus on what is fixed and will not change—namely, Jesus! When loose ends hang over my head, He is the only One who can really tie them up.

When I fix my eyes on all the loose ends in my life, I start to unravel. However, when I fix my eyes on Jesus, He enables me to prioritize my schedule, activities, time, talents, and treasures toward the eternal. I am grateful that His Spirit helps me organize and accomplish what He knows needs my attention.

Think of a small loose end. If you can, go ahead and take a few minutes to tie it up now. As you work, ask Jesus to help you trust Him with the big loose ends too.
