Jesus, The Real Mr. Wonderful

A child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

I have a Mr. Wonderful talking doll that I cannot bring myself to stick in a yard sale. If something makes me laugh, I intend to keep it, and Mr. Wonderful makes me laugh. As the package promised, “He always knows just what to say.” Mr. Wonderful says, “You know, honey, why don’t you just relax and let me make dinner tonight?” and “The ball game really isn’t all that important. I’d rather spend time with you.” When I pull the doll’s string, he responds idealistically to expectations we sometimes put on the “Mr. Wonderfuls” we actually live with.

When I first saw this doll at a friend’s home and listened to the remarks that were unrealistic expectations that every woman wants to hear, I thought of the real Mr. Wonderful, who has made us promises that He really does fulfill. Jesus is our true Mr. Wonderful. He is God, and His name is Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Getting to know Jesus and focusing on His attributes gives us so much more than repeated recorded messages.

The man-made Mr. Wonderful can only say “I love you,” but our Creator God shows His love by first sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die in our place and then sending the Holy Spirit to reside in us and help us. God initiated and implemented the way for us to have a love relationship with Him for all eternity. He’s not all talk, like my animated doll.

When the doll says, “You’ve been on my mind all day. That’s why I bought you these flowers,” it isn’t really thinking of me at all. But we can be assured that God is always thinking of us and seeing to our needs. God, our Wonderful Counselor, is our living Mr. Wonderful.
