Heroes Among Us

Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep.

Romans 12:15

We all need Christian heroes this side of heaven to model Jesus Christ. Being surrounded by so many heroes in my life has helped me grow in my love for Christ.

Most of my close heroes have been women, simply because I have only two men in my life whom I spend time with: Jesus and my husband. But over the years I have certainly learned much from people who have shared God’s wisdom through their books, sermons, and occupations. The great men and women of faith in the Bible are also heroes to me because God recorded His words to us through them and they helped grow the early church. We are all a part of that early church today if we have trusted in Christ.

Anyone can be a hero of faith simply by living God’s way day by day. Oftentimes the ongoing stresses of the mundane can try our faith more than a more intense but short-lived trial. Everyday heroes is what Romans 12 is about—practical ways God’s people live the Christian life as a living sacrifice to God.

As Christian brothers and sisters, we are recipients of God’s great love and mercy for us through each other. Right now, think of someone who has sacrificed his or her time, spiritual gifts, or earthly treasures for you. In Romans 12:15 we are instructed by Paul to “be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep.” Being a faithful and available servant who ministers to others takes heroic strength, patience, unselfishness, and courage. Getting in the trenches and sharing someone’s hardship shines Jesus’ light and love over someone who needs Him.

My sweet friend Jayne has a card ministry. It is something God has given her to do. I am always amazed by her thoughtfulness toward others in the good times as well as the sad situations. You and I may not have this particular hero quality, but we can find our own style of reaching out. That's what branches do (John 15)!

Have you ever considered your potential to be a hero? You don’t need a fancy costume or superpowers. Your power comes from God Himself. Think of a way to give of yourself today and be a hero in the little things. God makes your effort big.
