Dry Skin

All the trees will know that it is I, the LORD, who cuts the tall tree down and makes the short tree grow tall. It is I who makes the green tree wither and gives the dead tree new life. I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will do what I said!

Ezekiel 17:24

I have a never-ending battle with dry skin. I know what to blame: my heated and air-conditioned house. Don’t get me wrong. I am thankful for my furnace and my AC, but they do suck the moisture out of my skin when I’m inside. I remember the first time I spotted a sign of dryness on my legs. I immediately headed to the drugstore and asked the pharmacist which lotion to buy. For two weeks, I applied the recommended lotion. I wasn’t dabbing a little here and a little there; I was using a liberal amount and rubbing it in every day. It did the trick—no more dry skin! As long as I was consistent, the problem was taken care of.

What about our hearts? Do they ever feel dry? We need to be revitalized by God’s Word. When we spend time in God’s Word, committing Scripture to heart, the nourishing power of the Holy Spirit will shine through us. People will notice if we do it consistently because the change will be visible to them.

There is no way to live an abundant, consistent Christian life apart from Christ. And there is no way to know what He says unless we read His Word. I am afraid there are a lot of scaly Christians running around who need to rub in God’s Word. We must let it soften and penetrate our brittle hearts. Before long we will notice that our priorities change and our attitudes toward others do too. It’s Jesus, the Living Water, hydrating us and making us flourish.
