Citizenship In Heaven

Citizenship in Heaven

We are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives.

Philippians 3:20

“Kim, how did you not know passports expire?”

“God knows everything, and He knew that I didn’t know that,” I replied to my husband, Mark.

Granted, the timing was less than perfect. I had made the discovery less than twenty-four hours before boarding a flight to Germany.

My true citizenship is in heaven, and I wasn’t thinking much about my earthly citizenship, since it is temporary! Still, God had given us this reunion trip from Sweet Aunt Gladys, and He could make a way for me to get there when there seemed to be no possible way it could happen.

I phoned a friend whose husband had worked in DC and then, at her suggestion, phoned the congressional office that handled expedited passport requests. I was told I would need to drive two hours to the passport office in DC the next morning with my expired passport to get in line and wait. In order for me to make the flight, I had to be back in Richmond by 1:00 p.m. There was no wiggle room.

I am a girl who grew up in a one-stoplight town. I had never driven in DC traffic before. Mark was in charge of basketball camp that morning, so it was God and me—or no Germany! My friend gave me detailed instructions of what to do, including hailing a taxi (another first step of faith). I left our home at 5:00 a.m., drove to DC, parked, got a taxi to the passport office, waited in line, and explained my dilemma.

They expedited my passport at 10:00 a.m., and when I got back to my car I screamed at the top of my lungs, “Thank You, God!” When I beat Mark home from work, I yelled, “I became a woman today! I drove to DC all by myself . . . only because my citizenship really is in heaven!” I am still in awe of God’s personal care.

Do something out of your comfort zone today to celebrate your citizenship in heaven that never expires. This passport is issued by our personal God in Christ Jesus.
