Call On God

I will call on God, and the LORD will rescue me.

Psalm 55:16

In an earlier devotion I told you that I inherited my dad’s 1986 Ford pickup and repainted it from man-blue to girl-pink. It still runs well for neighborhood errands—women going to the consignment store or men friends frequently borrowing it to haul large items. Mark teases me that he tries to use it only at night. If you live near me and need to get a sofa or refrigerator home, I’m your girl. My pink truck is available.

Recently, I needed to pick up a large wardrobe with the help of two other women, and transport it home until I could drop it off at a consignment shop. It was not easy for three women to load, but a kind man gave us the extra boost we needed and then shut the tailgate. Unbeknownst to me, the tailgate was not completely latched. On a busy road on my way home, the huge piece of furniture fell out of the big pink truck into traffic! I could not believe it!

I was so relieved that the wardrobe had not fallen onto another car, caused an accident, or hurt anyone and that it landed near the side of the road instead of in the middle of the street. “Emotional me” remained supernaturally calm—embarrassed, but calm. All I said aloud was “Lord!” Thinking about it now, I love that He gave me the instinctive reaction to call His name immediately when I needed help and needed to know I wasn’t alone. I was so happy to have Him to talk to—to literally call out to!

After sitting through a long stoplight, I maneuvered to a spot where several helpful men from a nearby store could haul the heavy, bruised and broken piece back to the bed of my pink truck!

Later I wondered how many people go merrily on their way every day, following their own path, unaware that God is a very present help to whom they can call out, “Lord!” when they are in trouble (Psalm 46:1, NKJV).

Hide Psalm 46:1 in your heart right now so the next time you’re in trouble, His Spirit living in you can urge you to call out, “Lord!” too.
