Born-again Birthday

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”

John 3:3

Oh, I’ll admit it. The term born again has caused some uncomfortable moments in my Christian experience. Some people get stuck trying to make a distinction between a Christian and a “born-again Christian.” Maybe they’re curious whether the born-again Christian has privileges not available to a regular Christian.

I was unsure where born again originated until I started studying God’s Word. I was surprised to find it right there in the Bible! In John 3, Jesus said it first to Nicodemus, a biblical scholar who questioned the concept of being birthed again from his mother’s womb. Jesus explained to Nicodemus that all people experience a physical birth, but in order to see the Kingdom of God, they must have a spiritual birth that happens when they accept His gift of salvation.

Jesus’ words bring wonderful news to anyone wondering about being born again. A true Christian is a born-again Christian. Christians have been born physically and then are reborn spiritually when they accept Christ as Savior. And just as a physical birth happens only once, a spiritual birth is a onetime event as well.

This new spiritual life continues growing throughout eternity as long as a believer continues getting to know Jesus. Not only do we receive new life at the time of our salvation, but Jesus continues to re-create our hearts and minds to reflect His character and grace. When we stop to think about it, believers who actively seek Him are always experiencing new life.

Every day we make choices whether or not to live God’s way and continue in this ever-new life. Godly choices keep us young at heart forever, and the celebration never ends!
