Do you ever have dreams in which you can fly? A lot of kids do. Many people have wished they could fly like the birds. Way back in the 1480s, Leonardo da Vinci studied flight and sketched flying machines. Centuries before that, the ancient Greeks made up the story of Icarus, who got airborne but flew too close to the sun. The dream of human-powered flight lives on, even with all our modern aircraft.

At the Red Bull Flugtag in August 2010, 34 teams of wannabe pilots came to California to launch their homemade flyers off the Long Beach Pier. Flugtag means “flying day” in German. Good description. The goal of Flugtag was to see who could fly the farthest off the 30-foot-high pier. Everyone eventually crashed into the ocean, but Team Peepin’ It Real claimed victory by soaring 98 feet. You know those sugary marshmallow birds called Peeps that are famous at Easter? The winning aircraft was a giant yellow Peep with a cockpit and propeller. The all-female team was a group of mechanical and aerospace engineering students. Seems like their education is paying off.

What’s the Score?

When Jesus looked at the birds, he probably didn’t wish he could fly. Instead he taught his disciples—and us—an important lesson. “Look at the birds,” he said in Matthew 6:26. “They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?” In other words, don’t worry. Even though you can’t fly, you are much more important to God than the birds. He will take care of you and give you what you need.

What do you get worried about? Grades? Friends? Popularity? Your family? God cares about all the details of your life. He wants to work them out for your best. He also sees the big picture and knows what’s the best overall. Not everything will work out exactly like you would want it, but God promises to take care of you no matter what. Keeping that truth in mind can help keep you soaring.
