God made Eric Liddell fast. The Scottish sprinter won a gold medal in the 1924 Summer Olympics. But Eric will always be remembered for his faith in Jesus Christ more than for his speed. In 1924, Eric was one of the best 100-meter sprinters in the world. He qualified for the Summer Games and was a favorite to win gold. There was just one problem: the 100-meter schedule called for the final heats to be run on Sunday—and Eric said he wouldn’t run on the Sabbath, which God commanded to be a day of rest.

At first Eric was criticized for his decision. People begged him to reconsider for the good of his country. Eric stood firm. He trained and qualified for the 200 and 400 meters instead, but no one gave him much chance in those events. Yet Eric had faith that God would honor his decision. On this day in 1924, when the gun sounded for the 400 finals, Eric bolted from the blocks. He never trailed as he flew around the track and finished with a time of 47.6 seconds—a new world record!

What’s the Score?

Just before the start of the 400 finals, a British trainer handed a piece of paper to Eric. On it was written, “It says in the Old Book, ‘Him that honours me, I will honour.’ Wishing you the best of success always.” Eric ran with that message in his mind as he captured the gold. That moment was highlighted in the Academy Award–winning movie Chariots of Fire, which was about Eric’s life. In the movie, Eric’s character says he could feel God’s pleasure when he ran.

It does feel good to follow God. Making decisions that honor God gives us a good feeling inside. Eric’s life proved that God honors those who honor him (1 Samuel 2:30). He stood up for his beliefs and didn’t run on Sunday. And then Eric pulled off one of the best races in Olympic history.

On the Ball

Have you ever been tempted to go against one of God’s commands? It would’ve been easy for Eric to agree to run on Sunday and take part in his best event. Instead he risked not winning a gold medal and suffered the ridicule of other athletes and people in the media. When you’re in a situation in which you are tempted to compromise your faith, remember what Eric did. And remember that God honors those who honor him.
