Imagine if the NBA champions played the best basketball teams from different leagues around the world until the best of the best was the final winner. That’s the idea of the UEFA Champions League. The top soccer teams from each European nation play until there’s one champion.

On this day in 2007, the Italian club A.C. Milan battled England’s Liverpool in the UEFA final. At the center of Milan’s offense was its Brazilian striker, Kaká. Liverpool covered him well. But with less than 10 minutes left, Kaká made a perfect pass to assist a goal that put Milan up 2–0. Liverpool scored in the final minute, but Milan held on for the victory. Confetti showered the field. As Milan celebrated, Kaká pulled off his jersey to show his undershirt. It read in big, black letters, “I belong to Jesus.” He ran a lap around the field waving to fans and celebrating. There was no mistaking his message of thanks to God.

The victory was part of an amazing year for Kaká. He received several prestigious awards, including soccer’s highest honor, the World Player of the Year. As usual, the humble star was gracious and quickly gave thanks and praise to God.

What’s the Score?

Kaká made a name for himself off the soccer field for his devotion and obedience to God. His example was way different from the examples of many other soccer pros who made headlines for their bad behavior. Kaká’s actions backed up his words, and his words were bold.

The Bible tells us, “Never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord” (2 Timothy 1:8). As you can tell by his T-shirt, Kaká did whatever he could to use his fame to tell people about Jesus. In what creative ways can you bring attention to Jesus? Words are good. Actions are good. And sometimes there are other unique ways: art, songs, fiction, and poetry. The options are endless. What’s important is to be willing and prepared to tell others about your faith in Jesus.

Never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And don’t be ashamed of me, either, even though I’m in prison for him. With the strength God gives you, be ready to suffer with me for the sake of the Good News. 2 Timothy 1:8
