“Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. I’m going to ride my kayak over an 82-foot waterfall.” Can you imagine telling your mom something like that? Christie Glissmeyer’s mom might have seen it coming. Her daughter was a professional white-water kayaker. Christie’s mom probably still wasn’t thrilled by the idea, but on Mother’s Day in 2009, Christie paddled right over the edge of Metlako Falls on Oregon’s Eagle Creek. The 82-foot plummet set a new record for the highest kayak drop by a woman.

It was definitely a “don’t try this at home” kind of event. Christie had carefully planned and studied the best route over the falls. And she went with experienced professional friends. Christie’s biggest challenge was not freaking out at the top. She paddled hard with the “green tongue,” the flow of the main current, and let the water launch her over the edge. Christie threw her paddle away, tucked forward, and closed her eyes. Then she let gravity and the water do the work. She splashed into the pool below and was surprised at how soft the landing felt.

What’s the Score?

Have you ever been to a big waterfall? You can feel and hear it before you see it. There’s an amazing amount of energy in flowing water. If you’ve ever been white-water rafting, you know the feeling.

Jesus described the life he offers as “rivers of living water” flowing from our hearts (John 7:38). God’s Spirit is like a thundering waterfall pouring out of us, full of power, strength, and refreshment. Don’t let fear or embarrassment dam up the power inside you. Let God’s love and life pour out of you like an 80-foot waterfall. Other people will feel it and hear it before they even see you, and they’ll want to dive in!

Ask God to give you a chance to share his love with someone today. Dive in. Get in God’s powerful current. And watch for the opportunity he brings to share about him.
