God's Coaching #100
Why did the golfer wear two socks? In case he got a hole in one. Ha! Seriously, golf is a huge sport. You can watch golf on its own cable channel or see it on network television nearly every weekend. But golf had very humble beginnings in the United States. On this day in 1916, the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of America was founded in New York City with 35 members. These men wanted to see the sport of golf grow. And it has grown. Fewer than 100 years later in 2010, the PGA had 28,000 members—making it the largest sports organization in the world.
Not only does the PGA govern professional golf tournaments, but it also encourages children to get involved with the sport. It provides free lessons and equipment to underprivileged families. Plus, the PGA gives millions of dollars every year to charities.
What’s the Score?
Without the PGA, golf wouldn’t be the sport that it is today. This organization worked hard to bring up the next generation of young players. The PGA helped create the First Tee program, which takes golf to less-fortunate neighborhoods and supports golf education. Because of the PGA, golf has grown into one of the most popular sports in the world.
In the Bible, David’s army saw massive growth. God commanded the prophet Samuel to appoint David as king because Saul was no longer following God’s plan. The people had to choose sides, and many went with David.
God knows that there’s strength in numbers. That’s why he brought so many warriors to join David’s army. David couldn’t have become king without the help of his large army—just like without all of its members, the PGA couldn’t do so much for so many people. When you surround yourself with people who have your same goals, you can accomplish amazing things.
On the Ball
Can you accomplish more by yourself or with a group of people working with you? Silly question, right? Think about something you want to accomplish or somebody you might want to help. Now get together with friends who feel the same as you and make it happen!
