In automotive sports, the relationship between man and machine is key to success. Bob Davis knew his machine—a 2005 Yamaha snowmobile—well. Bob and his snowmobile set a world record in 2008 when they traveled 12,163 grueling miles from January to March. That’s like driving from Maine to San Diego, California, and back—twice! He started in Maine, went to Quebec and New Brunswick in Canada, and ended up back in Maine.

The former Marine helicopter pilot said the most difficult part of breaking the 60-day snowmobile record was being mentally tough. There were days when he just wanted to rest. But to achieve his goal, Bob knew he had to average 200 miles every single day. He was also aware of the dangers of the trip, so he packed plenty of food, clothing, emergency supplies, fuel, oil, and spare parts.

What’s the Score?

Some of those parts came in handy. At one point, Bob drove through a slushy lake. The water froze and broke his driveshaft. On day 58, his rear suspension spring broke. But Bob said his snowmobile was super-reliable overall. He could trust it to perform every day.

Reliability. It means being trustworthy. Dependable. Think about those three words. Aren’t those the exact characteristics you’d want in a friend? A friend who you can share your secrets with and know they won’t be spread around. A friend who will always be there for you. A friend who sticks by you in good times and bad. Proverbs 20:6 says, “Many will say they are loyal friends, but who can find one who is truly reliable?”

As you look for reliable friends, don’t forget to be a friend like that too. When you are reliable, trustworthy, and dependable, you’re the kind of person people want for a friend.

Do you have a reliable friend? If so, thank God for bringing that person into your life. And remember that Jesus is also that forever friend. He’ll always be with you, and you can trust him with anything or with any problems that come your way.
