Your Inheritance

Matthew 5:1-12

God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. (Matthew 5:8)

SOME PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED in building wealth in order to spend it. But the mentality of someone who understands his or her family as a multigenerational endeavor is more interested in building assets to pass down for the next generation to build on further. The point is not to burn up what was been gathered but to invest it in something great. The eyes of faith see ever-increasing possibilities. The family fortune is meant to go on and on.

That’s how it works in the family of God, too, although usually with a different set of assets. God invests in his children, and like the master in the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30), he expects his children to invest in others. Why? Because the Kingdom of God is an enormous building project that lasts throughout all generations to the end of time and beyond. Those who embrace the Kingdom culture—who embody the characteristics presented in the Beatitudes—receive a Kingdom inheritance. In fact, we become coheirs with Jesus. And what does he deserve to inherit? Everything. We become recipients of all that is.

That’s why the Beatitudes promise that the humble will inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5) and the poor in spirit will have the Kingdom of heaven itself (5:3). Of course, the even greater inheritance is a face-to-face relationship with the Father (5:8). Those who seek only the Kingdom are just looking for what they can get from God. Those who know the King have the love and joy of the universe’s most exhilarating relationship and the Kingdom too. In other words, a single-hearted focus on the King and his ways results in the ultimate fulfillment. That’s the enormity of the promise Jesus gave.

Every human being longs for this, though many don’t know it. All things in heaven and earth were created for the Son (Colossians 1:16), and all who have been adopted into his family by faith become joint heirs with him (Romans 8:17). Embrace the character and the promises of the family culture, and offer it to others generously. An inheritance so vast is meant to be shared.

{Lord, the treasures of your Kingdom are vaster than I can imagine, yet you offer them to those who carry the right priorities and desires. Shape my vision, dreams, and heart to be pure. Let me see you and receive your Kingdom. Amen.
