The Way, The Truth, And The Life

John 14:1-14

I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)

MODERN CULTURES HAVE gradually lost their sense of absolutes over the last few centuries, and we can see the signs of relativism all around us. In some respects, the change is good; not everything claimed as an absolute in the past—the earth as the physical center of the universe, for instance—actually was one. But some things still are, including God and his Word. We may grow in our understanding and interpretation of truth, but truth itself doesn’t evolve. We were given insights into the eternal realm of God’s Kingdom for a reason, and we are compelled to hang on to them. Reality is not a fashion, and it doesn’t change with the times.

We are told, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8), so his words about being the way, the truth, and the life still apply. He did not present himself as one way among many, as one truth to consider among others, or as one opportunity for life among the many other things people pursue to feel alive. He is the gateway, the entry point, the door into the eternal Kingdom of God, and no one can experience real, lasting life without him. We may look around us and see people who don’t believe in Jesus enjoying their natural existence, but they are building their lives on shifting sands, not lasting bedrock. Those of us who have entered into the Kingdom by faith are empowered by the powerful energy of divine life within us. Those who haven’t aren’t.

You are called to be a living, breathing example of what it means for a person to anchor his or her life in eternity and follow the way of true life. While others sample the buffets of earthly experience, you cling to a single guide who leads you along his unique way into real life according to absolute truth. Your path, your gifts, and your personality are not identical to anyone else’s, but your Savior is universal. Do not waver from your calling; do not compromise your convictions; and do not draw life from any other source. You already have the best there is.

{Jesus, you are incomparable, and your ways are unequaled. In a world full of options, focus my life on the only one that matters. Let me be seen as a personification of your way, your truth, and your life. Amen.
