The Next Step

Acts 9:10-16

The Lord said, “Go, for Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel.” (Acts 9:15)

“WHAT IS MY PURPOSE IN LIFE?” Multitudes of people have asked that question. Anyone who believes there is any design in creation wants to know where he or she fits into it. And in his timing, God can give quite specific direction. God told Abraham to move—but gave no clear direction on where until Abraham was on his way. Joseph was given a dream of being an influential ruler but went through years of seemingly senseless hardships before he finally saw that dream fulfilled. Moses waited years before being told step by step where to go and what to do. These men and many others saw pieces of God’s purpose for their lives. None, however, got the full blueprint.

Paul’s mission was made clear first to Ananias and then to him—that this Jew of Jews (Philippians 3:4-5) would minister to Gentiles. But that was a destination point, not a plan. Along the way, Paul would influence apostles, preach in synagogues, and create a stir among Temple crowds. Even with his strong sense of purpose, he had to be led step by step, at times being turned in directions he did not expect to go. His divinely directed mission in this world was only revealed to him at critical moments.

God gives destination points to some people. To a few, he gives specific routes. But to most of us, he gives a lifetime of next steps, many of which are not completely clear in the moment. But whatever degree of guidance he gives—and he will give some, though sometimes it may not seem like much—you can be certain of his calling for your life today: to represent him, reflecting his heart and his image, in every relationship you have, regardless of the job you have or the tasks on your to-do list. If you look for meaning, you will see it in every moment. That is the big picture of your life—even if the destination is not yet clear.

{Lord, I would love to see your road map for my life. Encourage me with glimpses of it. But even more, help me see purpose in knowing you and loving others. There is no bigger picture than being your child today. Amen.
