Pursuing The Treasure

2 Peter 1:3-7

In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. (2 Peter 1:5)

SPANISH DISCOVERY OF THE many silver and gold deposits in the New World upped the intensity of world exploration and fueled European economies for centuries to come. The realization that precious metals were waiting to be found and exploited by first-comers resulted in enormous changes in the wealth of kingdoms and the balance of world power. Why? Because no one ignores a treasure. People drop everything to pursue it (Matthew 13:44-46). The search becomes their focus.

Redemption is a vast treasure, yet many people who say they believe in it don’t explore its depths or take advantage of its promise. It’s an odd situation in light of what God has said about us. The act of redeeming includes the divine nature, a calling into astounding glory and excellence, a provision for every situation of need (2 Peter 1:3). We have been promised the fullness of an entirely new way of living and being, yet we slip into old patterns and expectations with ease. Far too often, the treasure does not compel us. We are not captivated by the vision of new worlds. Having been promised the presence and power of God, we far too often fail to see it.

Every problem in life and every obstacle you face may appear to be a hindrance to you, but it is not. Each one is an opportunity, the wind that lifts your wings, the moment to seek God’s face and find it. The eyes of faith ask the right questions and expect the answers: Who does God want to be for me in this situation? What aspect of his nature does he want to reveal? In what ways does he want me to experience him in the trial or trouble I’m going through? Every moment of need is a potential moment of experiencing God in some way.

Fix your eyes on that treasure. Or in today’s vernacular, bring it all to the table. In your quest to experience his fullness, never leave God’s promises sitting there. Let the divine nature, already given, rise up in you.

{Lord, give me the faith to believe and receive. May I not miss one step of the purposes you have set before me. May I grow fully into your promises of divine nature. Amen.
