Kingdom Promotions

Acts 28:17-31

For the next two years, Paul lived in Rome at his own expense. He welcomed all who visited him, boldly proclaiming the Kingdom of God. (Acts 28:30-31)

WHEN JOSEPH WAS A YOUNG MAN, God gave him dreams of his future and the influence he would have (Genesis 37). Almost immediately, the circumstances of his life seemed to turn in the opposite direction. He was sold by his brothers into slavery in Egypt, falsely accused while there and imprisoned, and forgotten by the one person who might have been able to help him gain his freedom. But every step of the way, Joseph rose in favor among those with influence. And every step of the way, what looked to be a setback was really a step closer to the purpose God had given him. Joseph’s disappointments were really his promotions.

The same was true for Paul, though Paul was likely more aware of God’s work in his circumstances. His arrest was the means to an end, which ultimately involved a trip to Rome and a hearing in high places. But even in captivity, Paul was not deterred. He wrote letters. He preached to members of the Praetorian Guard (Philippians 1:12-14). He encouraged Christians and churches. He became an example in his days of hiddenness. His circumstances never detracted from his message; in fact, they served to enhance it.

You may not find yourself in this world’s halls of power, but you can be certain that God will orchestrate events in your life to put you in places of influence—even when you aren’t aware of the influence you have. Earthly setbacks may be promotions from God’s perspective and opportunities in disguise. That was true of Joseph, Paul, and many other biblical characters, each of whom could have lamented their losses every step of the way. But laments do not fit the Kingdom well, at least not with regard to circumstances orchestrated by our sovereign God. Never be discouraged by limiting situations; God is not limited in them at all. In reality, neither are you.

{Lord, forgive my limited vision. I see hardships and setbacks; you see opportunities and promotions. May I never waste a circumstance you have given me. Give me Kingdom influence, even when I don’t see it. Amen.
