God’s Will

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

IF YOU’RE LIKE MOST CHRISTIANS, you’ve prayed to understand God’s will for your life. It’s a reasonable prayer, and one he is sure to answer—in time. God promises to give wisdom and specific direction to all who seek him. Of course, that means seeking him first and foremost, rather than seeking information. But when we grow in our relationship with him, we grow in our understanding of what he wants us to do. Our calling becomes clearer in his presence.

One often-quoted principle about discovering God’s will is that he will not reveal more until we are following what he has already revealed. If that’s the case, Paul’s words in 1 Thessalonians become vitally relevant. Before we embark on the next phase in our lives, before we know which decision to make about when, where, and what we are supposed to do, we can be certain that God’s will for us is to be thankful in all circumstances. We cannot move forward until gratitude has become central in our hearts and minds. We can only advance with the right attitude.

That theme comes up often in Scripture. Our minds are preoccupied with what we are supposed to do, while God is far more focused on who we are. Religion emphasizes doing; the gospel emphasizes being. Why? Because your heart is the wellspring of your life (Proverbs 4:23). Unless you want to live your life acting a part, everything you do flows out of who you really are. God is much more interested in your ability to represent him than your ability to check off instructions.

Gratitude is a profound reflection of your relationship with God, and it sets the tone for everything you will do in his name. As you listen for his direction, embrace what he has already revealed. Regardless of circumstances, live in thankfulness, and your heart will align with his.

{Father, synchronize my heart with yours. Open my eyes to see how enormously your blessings outweigh my problems. May words of gratitude pour from my mouth in all things, at all times. Amen.
