For The Common Good

1 Corinthians 10:23-24

Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others. (1 Corinthians 10:24)

IN A FALLEN WORLD, human nature turns toward self. Self-focused people look out for their own interests above the interests of others, which means that the way of the world naturally leans toward exploitation. People generally want to make a sale for their benefit, not yours; they want to promote an idea for their sake, not yours; and they want to attain a certain status to boost their self-esteem, even at the expense of others. We call it human nature, and sometimes it shows up only in mild forms. But we also know the ugly side of exploitation in conquests, enslavements, oppression, and scams. The world is full of self-promoters.

Sadly, this tendency can infiltrate the church too, but it shouldn’t. We are called to an entirely different culture. As people of a new life, the way we do business should look different from the way the rest of the world does it. Imagine the possibilities: economic policies that don’t exploit anyone yet produce healthy growth and prosperity; consumer-focused capitalism that serves buyers before sellers; businesses that consider ethics an asset rather than a liability. Some have discovered the benefit of such attitudes and practices; others will realize them later. In any case, the people of God should be blazing new trails and leading the way. The marketplace is not irrelevant to the Kingdom of God; it can be a platform for demonstrating his character.

If you are in business, consider how you might apply Kingdom principles to your business practices. If you play a role in the marketplace, think of how you can contribute to changing the culture. Historically, Christians have often accommodated the ways of the world in their trade and lived a somewhat distinct life at home and church. But the gospel transforms everywhere. Even in a competitive environment, it bears fruit. God honors those who go against the grain to follow his ways. Let every area of your life, even your business and finances, become a platform for the wisdom and love he gives you.

{Lord, you are selfless by nature. Show me how to live according to your nature even in areas of this world that resist it. By the power of your Spirit, may I instinctively seek the welfare of others in every situation. Amen.
