Beyond Competence

Proverbs 22:17-29

Do you see any truly competent workers? They will serve kings rather than working for ordinary people. (Proverbs 22:29)

WE ARE CALLED TO STAND OUT. Many of us are pretty uncomfortable with the spotlight, and some have experienced the pain of standing out for the wrong reasons. But we are given the light of God for the purpose of shining, and that means we will be noticeable. It does not mean everyone is called to be a vocal evangelist or preacher. But when we apply ourselves diligently to the work God has given us, whether the church looks at it as sacred or secular, he will put us in positions of influence. We will stand out because we have something worthwhile to offer.

We’ve seen that principle at work often in Scripture, whether in the example of Joseph before the king of Egypt, Daniel and his friends before the king of Babylon, or the call all believers have been given to serve their earthly masters and bosses as though they were serving the Lord. We have seen that mediocrity is not a testimony to the nature of our God, but excellence is. We have every reason to become thoroughly accomplished in the gifts and talents we have been given, and to strive for the kind of knowledge that contributes to the world while also pointing to God. We are designed not only to represent his wisdom, power, and love, but to represent them as fully and completely as we can. And given the promise of his Spirit, that’s a lot.

Make it your aim as a believer to lead the way in whatever field you work in. Whether that aim results in a leadership position or not—and it certainly doesn’t have to—you can become known for innovation, creativity, and high standards. The wisdom of Proverbs suggests that when you do so, you will eventually enter into places of influence. There, and every step along the way, you serve as a testimony to the quality of God’s ways. Your gifts open doors—to positions, possibly, but even more importantly, to hearts.

{Lord, I can only imagine that Jesus had excellent carpentry skills and a commendable work ethic. May I follow in his footsteps even in these qualities. May my works testify of your nature, open doors of influence, and glorify your name. Amen.
