Weapons Of War

We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

WE DON’T TEND TO THINK of our homes as war zones. And yet sometimes we do sense that we are under attack. We know we have an enemy who has come into this world and shows up at our door with intentions “to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10). He intends to steal away the truth of God’s Word implanted in our children’s hearts so they are left with only human reasoning and false arguments. He intends to kill off the fruit of humility blossoming in our children’s lives so they will pridefully assume no need for God. He intends to destroy any sense that obeying Christ will make them truly and eternally happy so they will be left only with rebellious thoughts of doing life their own way.

Once we realize that our home is, in fact, a war zone, where a battle is raging for the souls of all who live there, we realize that we have no power of our own to defeat the enemy. We are in need of divine power. And so we read God’s Word together instead of just watching TV. We live by faith, not by our own ingenuity and hard work. We depend upon the power of the Holy Spirit, not simply our own good intentions. And we pray together instead of spending time in worry.

God, we recognize that in our family there are some deeply entrenched ways of relating to each other, to you, and to the world around us, and we are powerless to change unless you provide us with divine power. There are some deeply held beliefs that are opposed to your Word, some prideful attitudes and rebellious ways of thinking that simply must be captured and destroyed. So will you show us how to take up your weapons to fight the battle? We want to use the weapons you provide to fight for ________’s very soul.
