The Truth You Were Taught

Now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Colossians 2:6-7

IT TAKES A LONG TIME for the roots of a tree to grow down deep into the soil. Through the years our children are in our homes, we are nourishing the soil of their hearts as we pour into them the truths of the Scripture and our own delight in God. Just as a tree’s roots go down into the earth, we want our children’s “roots” to go down into Christ. We want them grounded in him so they can bear the weight of the difficulties of life in this world.

We teach them the truth, praying that their faith will go deep and grow strong. We’re holding on to the promise that when God’s Word goes out, it always produces fruit:

The rain and snow come down from the heavens

and stay on the ground to water the earth.

They cause the grain to grow,

producing seed for the farmer

and bread for the hungry.

It is the same with my word.

I send it out, and it always produces fruit.

It will accomplish all I want it to,

and it will prosper everywhere I send it. (Isaiah 55:10-11)

Lord, we pray that ________ will not have a shallow faith, but that her roots will go down deep in you. We pray that the soil of ________’s heart will be receptive to your Word as it is preached, read, and discussed in our home. We pray that the day will come when ________ will overflow with thankfulness for the deep roots that grew and the solid foundation that was formed by the truth she was taught growing up.
