Show Me Where To Walk

Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning,

for I am trusting you.

Show me where to walk,

for I give myself to you. Psalm 143:8

DAVID WAS IN A DARK and difficult situation. “My enemy has chased me. He has knocked me to the ground and forces me to live in darkness like those in the grave” (verse 3). He was waiting in the dark and didn’t know what would happen next. So what did he do? “I lift my hands to you in prayer,” he told God (verse 6).

Advent is a time of anticipation, a time of waiting for the Light to come into the darkness. And we, as parents, know a lot about waiting. Our task rarely produces immediate results. We often wonder if all our efforts to parent well are having any lasting effect on our kids. Our investment is future oriented, a deposit made toward the yet-unseen years of their adulthood. Like David, we wait in the dark and wonder what is going to happen. But we don’t wait alone or with no resources. We have a Lord who listens. We call out to the Lord who has promised to show us where to walk when we can’t see the way forward.

Lord, let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, including this morning as we prepare to celebrate the birth of your Son,

for I am trusting you.

Show me where to walk on this pathway of parenting ________,

for I give myself to you.

Rescue me from my enemies of discouragement and fear over ________’s future, LORD;

I run to you to hide me.

Teach me to do your will,

for you are my God.

May your gracious Spirit lead me forward

on a firm footing.

I’m raising ________ for the glory of your name, O LORD, not mine.

Because of your faithfulness, bring me out of this distress.

I am your servant.
