Unfailing love and truth have met together.
Righteousness and peace have kissed! Psalm 85:10
IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN, peace walked hand in hand with righteousness. But the day came when peace and righteousness were divorced. Sin created alienation between them so that peace and righteousness were separated. Peace could not come back unless righteousness had been satisfied, and righteousness could not be satisfied unless payment for sin was made. Then, on the cross of Calvary, the Righteous One was crucified. Righteousness took sin upon himself so that peace could come home. Righteousness and peace kissed.
At the Cross, God’s unbending demand for truth came face-to-face with his mercy; his unchanging demand for perfect righteousness came together with peace made possible by Christ’s atoning sacrifice. “We have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us” (Romans 5:1). This peace is permanent because God doesn’t simply ignore our sins and faults; instead, Christ dealt with them fully and forever. The truth about our sin has met up with the abounding mercy of God in Christ.
Of all the loving kisses that our children have enjoyed so far and will enjoy in their future, surely it is this divine kiss that will bring them the most lasting joy. This is the kiss that makes it possible for them to face the truth about themselves with confidence that they will still be loved by God. This is the kiss that brings peace when the enemy continually reminds them of the many ways they have fallen so far short of God’s standard of righteousness.
Oh, Lord, we’re so grateful for this divine kiss! We relish the freedom to be honest before you about our failures, knowing we will be met with mercy. We rest in the peace made possible by the righteousness of Christ we’ve received. May ________ see the beauty and enjoy the love and acceptance made possible by this divine kiss.
