Praise His Glorious Name

Praise the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone does such wonderful things. Praise his glorious name forever! Let the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and amen!

Psalm 72:18-19

There is no greater privilege than knowing God. The Father gave his precious, only Son that we might know him, not in a nominal, disconnected way but in an intimate way. While Scripture says that the people who know God are strong and able to resist evil (see Daniel 11:32), those who forget God or turn from him experience confusion, pain, and emptiness. Those people who revere the name of the God of Jacob are set securely on high and are sent help and support from heaven (see Psalm 20:1, NASB). Most of all, they find life, and life abundant. Yet those who rely on their own understanding and live without God inevitably head down a path of destruction rather than life. They boast in their own “chariots and horses,” in our day equating to accomplishments and wealth, but we are to “boast in the name of the LORD our God” alone (Psalm 20:7) and bless his glorious name forever.

But how can we praise his glorious name if we do not know God as he really is? Fortunately, the Lord didn’t leave us to our own devices to figure out who he is. He provided his Word, his wondrous deeds, and especially his many names revealed throughout the pages of Scripture to help us.

We are to bless Elohim, the Creator of heaven and earth; El-Shaddai, the God Almighty of Blessings; Adonai, our Lord; Jehovah, the Completely Self-Existing One, always present, revealed in Jesus, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever; and Jehovah-Shalom, the God of Peace, who in Christ is our peace in all situations and seasons until we see him face-to-face. Bless the Lord God, and praise his glorious name forever!

Oh God, lift our thoughts and hearts this day to your glorious names and manifold nature. Though we will never plumb the depths of the glory of your being, may we exalt, worship, and adore you, blessing your glorious name forever.
