Open Minded

He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.

Luke 24:45

The Scriptures make this statement after Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection but before his ascension. It is referring to his disciples, who had been with him for three years, learning from him in a variety of settings. He had been expounding the Scriptures—what we call the Old Testament—day and night. Besides that, they—as Jewish men—knew the Scriptures very well. Probably better than you and I will ever know them. Yet until Jesus himself opened their minds, they did not understand its teachings.

Paul prays in Ephesians 1:17, “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better” (NIV). The word revelation means “unveiling or uncovering.” The Scriptures say that when you turn to Christ, the veil that lies over your mind is removed (see 2 Corinthians 3:16). The Spirit is continually lifting the veil that hides deep truth so that you see and comprehend more and more of his Word each day. Just as he did for the disciples. God is giving you “spiritual wisdom and insight” so that you will know him better (see Ephesians 1:17-19).

God unveils his truth to our minds in many ways. He has appointed and gifted members in the body through whom he unveils truth. He often uses those who have the gift of teaching or preaching or prophecy, but they are not the source of understanding. God is the only one who can bring understanding of spiritual truth to your mind. Truth comes from his Spirit to your mind.

God reveals the truth in his Word at progressively deeper levels. Only he can do that. No matter how wonderful you may think a speaker or writer is, he or she cannot give you understanding of the truth spoken. If someone’s words have produced new insight in you, it is because Jesus himself has revealed it. Information comes from outside sources; revelation comes from Jesus within you. He promises to open your mind to understand the deep truths of his Word.

Jesus, speak deeply.

Love God, and he will dwell with you. Obey God, and he will reveal to you the truth of his deepest teachings.
