Home In His Home

You feed them from the abundance of your own house, letting them drink from your river of delights.

Psalm 36:8

This promise draws our attention to the intimacy that can be ours with the Father. He offers us the abundance of his own house. The things that are his are ours. We are not distant acquaintances or guests passing through. We are his children. He brings us into his house and makes us partakers of everything he has.

The apostle Paul packs this rich truth into a few words: “Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?” (Romans 8:32). He has already given us his greatest treasure. Reason and logic tell us that if God gave us his own Son, there is nothing he would withhold from us.

Maybe you are experiencing a time when it seems that God is withholding exactly what you think you need. You pray and pray and believe and believe, but it seems to get you nowhere. May I make a suggestion—something I learned out of exactly that kind of experience? The problem is not in how God gives but rather in how I receive. I want it all at once, right now, just as I think it should be.

Then I learned to start with believing God’s Word. He is feeding me from the abundance of his own house and letting me drink from his own river. He is giving me everything I need. Like his provision of manna for the Israelites in the wilderness, every day enough for that day. I began to thank him for his provision, even when it didn’t look the way I thought it should. I began to say, “I receive today’s daily bread with thanksgiving and praise. I trust your love, your wisdom. I trust you to give me everything I need, when I need it and in the way I need it.”

Father, open the eyes of my heart and cause me to see your abundant provision for me. Where I might be seeing you as withholding, please refresh the scene and let me see all that you are giving.

The remarkable thing is, we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.
