Hidden Treasure

I rejoice in your word like one who discovers a great treasure.

Psalm 119:162

The promises of God often come as delightful surprises. Imagine stumbling upon a treasure trove of every kind of abundance. Before, you were making do, and now, suddenly, you have discovered unimaginable wealth.

When we uncover the power in the promises of God, we are like a person who happens upon great spoil. Until we encounter the promises, we have no idea what God has available for us. The promises usher us into lives rich in expectant hope and overflowing with confidence in God. No more meager living. No more merely existing. Now we can live the abundant life.

How will you come upon God’s promises? How will you discover the great treasure waiting to be found? By mining the Word of God. God’s promises are found nowhere else. It’s no mystery where you have to be to come across the rich and powerful promises.

Stinson, the youngest of my three sons, was always a great little treasure hunter: bugs, rocks, sticks that looked like swords. Our neighborhood was a daily discovery project for him. He would burst exuberantly into the house at the end of the day and lay out all his finds for us to inspect and admire and ooh and ahh over. Having to contend with two older brothers, he soon learned that if he meant to keep his treasures safe, he had to hide them so they wouldn’t be taken away from him and so he knew right where they were when he needed them. When I cleaned the house, I often came across Stinson’s hiding places. The things he valued, he hid.

The psalmist gives us that same suggestion for the great treasure we find in God’s Word: “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11). As you come upon God’s promises, hide them in your heart so they won’t be snatched away by the enemy and so that you know right where they are when you need them.

Lord, lead me into the great depository of your promises. Your Word is my most valued possession. I treasure it. I rejoice in it. I hide it in my heart.

Nobody ever outgrows Scripture; the book widens and deepens with our years.
