God Our Security
God Our Security
The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.
Psalm 18:2
This psalm, written by David on the glorious day God rescued him from his enemies, including Saul, holds great promise for us today, for it reflects the truth that God is our rock, protection, and fortress. The Hebrew word translated “fortress” means a stronghold or refuge, a well-fortified place that we can run to when we are in danger. This is our God! He—not a castle surrounded by a moat, a giant fort with weapons stationed at every turret, or a team of big security guards—is our fortress and security. Because the Lord is our shield and our solid rock, in whom we find protection, we are safe in his presence, even when everything around us is uncertain or dark.
Corrie ten Boom experienced this truth when, following her release from a German concentration camp, she traveled around the world sharing the message of God’s love. She was not a young woman; she was already in her senior years. Yet God gave her the strength to travel from country to country, sharing her testimony so that others would find life, forgiveness, and salvation in Christ.
Once, Corrie felt called to go to Japan. Though sometimes she had a traveling companion, on this ministry trip she was all alone. At first she found it difficult to be in a country where she didn’t know a soul or understand the language. But then she remembered that God is our security and our rock. She meditated on the promise that through faith we are shielded by God’s power. Corrie’s ten months of ministry in Japan proved very fruitful. As Corrie trusted in the Lord, her security, doors were opened, and many Japanese people came to know Christ.
The same God who sustained Corrie ten Boom through her captivity and the loss of her family and sustained her into old age as she ministered around the world will be your strength and fortress.
Oh Lord, my rock and security when everything around me is insecure, help me to trust you to carry me throughout each day of my life.
My unmoving mansion of rest is my blessed Lord.
Charles Haddon Spurgeon(1834–1892), English preacher and writer
