Sharing the Divine Nature

Because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature. 2 Peter 1:4

MANY CHRISTIANS ARE INFECTED WITH I’m just a worm theology—a self-focus constantly reminding us of how unworthy we are in God’s sight and how depraved we remain. There’s nothing wrong with reflecting on the enormity of God’s grace, of course; our sinful background is what we’ve been saved from. But there’s nothing in Scripture that suggests that we remain in an unworthy, sinful, depraved state, nothing that tells us to linger on what we’ve been saved from without moving into what we’ve been saved for. Even some of the most troublesome believers in Scripture, the church at Corinth, are called saints, “holy ones,” those already made holy by Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:2). We are beloved, treasured, and sanctified, even when we don’t act like it. We have been given extraordinary promises that allow us to share in God’s divine nature.

As we’ve seen, our self-perception has everything to do with how we pray. Those who remain acutely sin-conscious, as though their sin is greater than the transforming grace they’ve been given, tend to pray weakly, timidly, and without much expectation. Those who recognize the magnificent privilege and status they’ve been given through Jesus and fully identify with him will come boldly into the throne room of grace. But the fact that we’ve been given promises enabling us to share in God’s divine nature points us even further into the importance of praying those promises into our experience. If sharing in God’s divine nature empowers our prayers, then we need to pray we would fully understand what it means to share in his divine nature. We need to soak in the identity we’ve been given. Those great and precious promises need to become our experience in every area of life.

Pray to know who you are so you can then pray for others from your divine identity. Daily ask God what the supernatural life looks like in you, and step into it in every way he leads. Don’t let his great and precious promises fall to the ground. Take them in, and live, breathe, and pray from your new divine nature.
