Hearts Fully Trusting

Let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. Hebrews 10:22

THE WOUNDED HUMAN SOUL allows itself to be filled with all sorts of objections to God’s goodness and love. It listens to the world’s rationalizations and arguments about God’s distance or nonexistence. It comes up with evidence and conditions that undermine God’s promises. And most of its maneuverings are based on a very simple, subtle lie: that our sin has disqualified us from the ideal. God must handle our failures and shortcomings with restrictions.

That sentiment of unworthiness is based on truth as it would be if God had not redeemed and restored us. It is a Christless frame of mind, or at least a mind infected with Christless thoughts. The good news of our redemption and restoration is that God has made us absolutely clean, identified us with Christ, adopted us as his children, and lavished on us every spiritual blessing in heavenly places. There are no insufficiencies in us when we come to him, no legitimate faith-killing regrets, no sense that we are any less worthy than the name of Jesus we pray with. We come to God’s throne clothed in the Son of God. That’s what he sees. And it’s glorious.

That means our hearts have been sprinkled clean, we’ve entered into the fellowship of the Trinity, and there is no blemish in us. We are not second-class members of the Kingdom, trying to grow to some unclear spiritual stature, earning our stripes in his army. We are there in the throne room with face-to-face fellowship and fully trusting hearts. There are no hindrances between us when we pray.

Few believers feel the emotions of that truth, especially when we recall a sin from years past, yesterday, or even a few minutes ago. Yet because our cleansing does not rise and fall with our feelings, neither should our confidence or our trust. We present every prayer to God as if Jesus asked it himself. That’s what “in his name” means. Believe it. Celebrate it. Live it. And let your faith grow in the throne room of God.
