Hearing His Secrets

I was worshiping in the Spirit. Suddenly, I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet blast. Revelation 1:10

JESUS PREDICTED A BETRAYER IN THE DISCIPLES’ MIDST, and only the betrayer himself knew who it was. But one disciple who was leaning against Jesus—the one who knew Jesus’ love perhaps better than any other—got the inside information. He was positioned to hear the Lord’s secrets. That same disciple was later worshiping while he was in exile, and “in the Spirit” he saw God’s throne room and perspective on history unfold before him. In positioning himself once again to hear the Lord’s secrets, John got a vision of staggering things to come.

God knows the language of our hearts, and he will speak to us in ways that reach us. He got Moses’ attention with a burning bush. He confirmed his will for Gideon through dew on fleece. He sent Jeremiah to observe a potter so he could make a statement about starting over with his people. He showed Amos a basket of fruit, had Hosea live out a painful parable, gave visions to Daniel, and spoke to Elijah in a still, small voice. God knows the ways we hear, and he meets us there. He reveals his secrets to those who love him. And in revealing his secrets, he invites us to pray with wisdom and insight for the things he is planning to do. Sometimes he shows us what is to come (John 16:13), but most of all he interprets our situations and circumstances in light of his will. His heart opens before us when we love him, worship him, and pray in the power of his Spirit.

Pursue the merging of hearts that comes through your adoration of God and fellowship with his Spirit. This is where the power of God enters into the prayers of human beings in ways we can hardly understand. This is where we see things we did not know about and breathe in desires that transform us and our petitions. Our lives, already united with him, become intertwined in a unison of wills, and he shares his heart with us in greater measure. The language of our heart finds fulfillment in the expression of his love.

The life of man consists in beholding God.
