Truth or Dare?

Girls have been playing Truth or Dare at slumber parties for years and years. I even went to a slumber party with my grown-up girlfriends not so long ago, and we played it! If one of us didn’t want to reveal a secret, we chose to take a dare instead.

It’s not right to dare God, but sometimes we want to know he’s really there. The Bible tells about one man who desperately needed proof of God’s faithfulness; it was Gideon, whose story is found in the book of Judges.

God called on Gideon to be a warrior and rescue his people from a group called the Midianites. He told Gideon to tear down an altar and false god his own dad had set up to worship. Gideon obeyed and did just that.

When it was time for him to lead the people into battle, Gideon was full of God’s Spirit (see Judges 6:34) but still nervous. He had never done anything like this before. So he asked God for a favor (see Judges 6:36-40).

Gideon put a wool fleece on the threshing floor (where people prepared wheat after the harvest). He said, “If you are truly going to use me to rescue Israel as you promised, prove it to me in this way.” He asked God that the fleece would be wet from the dew in the morning, but the ground around it would be dry, which would be impossible without God’s power. The next morning, God had done what Gideon asked.

Then Gideon used the same fleece and asked that God would make it dry and the ground around it wet with dew the following day. Sure enough, God answered Gideon and proved he was definitely going to use him to free Israel.

It’s not right to test or dare God, but it’s okay to ask him for help when your faith is shaky. If you’re having trouble believing, just ask him to increase your faith, and he’ll answer.
