To Know Him Is to Love Him

Bible Blast: Read John 10:22-30

Ashlyn Grabowski was kind of freaking out. She wanted to go to horseback riding camp and art camp in the summer, but she could only go to one. It was really hard to choose. To make things worse, she only had one more month before the registration deadlines for the camps, and making decisions wasn’t easy for Ashlyn.

“I don’t know what to do!” she pouted to her mom. “I want to go to both camps!”

Mrs. Grabowski stopped stirring her soup and turned to her daughter. “Ashlyn, have you prayed about it?”

Ashlyn let out a heavy sigh and said, “Well, no. I’m not sure I would know if he was speaking to me or not. Like, how do you know when God wants you to do something?”

Her mom smiled and said, “Let me ask you something. If I gave you money and said, ‘Go to the store and buy me a purse,’ what kind of purse would you buy for me?”

Ashlyn thought for a second and said, “That’s easy. I know you like to have a bright-colored bag, so I would get red or yellow. And since you like to carry a lot of stuff, I would make sure it was pretty big, not one of those little purses.”

“That’s exactly right, Ashlyn. But how did you know?”

“I guess it’s because I’ve shopped with you a lot, and I know you pretty well because we hang out,” she answered.

Mrs. Grabowski handed her a glass of lemonade. “That’s how it is with God. The more you get to know him and love him, the more you understand what he wants from you, and his voice becomes much more familiar to you. Take some time to ‘hang out’ with God, and his will won’t be such a mystery.”

Ashlyn looked hopeful. “That makes a lot of sense. I can definitely hang out with him more than I do. Do you think he’ll tell me which camp to go to?”

Her mom gave her a squeeze. “He might. Or he might just leave the decision up to you. Either way, you can’t go wrong by getting to know him better. That’s always good.”
