The Ten Commandments: Be Faithful

I am crazy in love with a man named Bob Gresh. I love him for a lot of reasons, but one is that he makes me laugh when I feel like crying. Once when I was about to go on stage at a big speaking event, I thought I might just break down and cry. My hosts got me to the church late, the sound guy was mad at me, and my PowerPoint wasn’t working. I texted Bob to pray for me. Do you know what he texted back? “I’m praying for you, and it will be okay. Jesus didn’t use PowerPoint when he spoke—except at the Sermon on the Mount. I think he may have used it then!” That really made me laugh—just in time!

I plan to be married to this man until I’m old and gray and wrinkly. And he is planning to love me even when I’m old and gray and wrinkly! That’s what this commandment is all about—being faithful for your entire life to just one man (or one woman, if you’re a man).

The world probably isn’t going to do a great job of teaching you about the importance of being faithful in relationships. But God’s Word tells us differently. Did you notice what it says in verse 12 of Ecclesiastes 4? These relationships are supposed to be a “cord of three strands” (NIV). That’s right! You, another person, and God are the three strands. The strongest marriage (or friendship) has God in the middle.

As you grow up, you may see lots of people giving up on relationships. They do it for lots of different reasons: fear, selfishness, sin, sickness, or weakness. Sometimes one person can try so hard to be faithful, but there is nothing he or she can do to make a relationship work. Bad things just happen in this sinful world. You need to know that God doesn’t ever fail in relationships. No matter what goes on around you, always remember that God stays committed to you. He’s your perfect heavenly Father who loves you so much that he sent his Son, Jesus, to die for you so that you could spend forever with him in heaven.
