Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your youth. . . . May you always be captivated by her love.

Proverbs 5:18-19

School will be starting soon. That means one thing: back-to-school shopping! Since you’re growing so fast right now, you might need to replace something in your wardrobe by the time school rolls around because it just doesn’t fit you anymore.

How do you approach school shopping? Do you just buy whatever the stores say is cool? Do you and your mom end up being totally stressed out by the end of it? One way to reduce that stress is to find out what God says about “modesty” before you hit the thrift store or the mall. What do you think of when you hear the word “modesty”? Maybe you think it means to dress in a way that doesn’t show off too much of your body. And you’re right. That is basically what it means. But let’s go deeper.

Today’s focus verse may have made you giggle a little bit. It’s sooo mushy-gushy lovey-dovey! When it says, “Rejoice in the wife of your youth,” it’s a reflection of God’s desire that a man should be totally captivated by only one woman’s beauty—his wife’s. In the same way, your beauty is meant to captivate only one man someday, and that’s your husband.

When girls and women dress in clothes that show off their tummies, breasts, legs, and other parts of their bodies, they’re not saving the deepest secrets of their beauty for that one man. They’re showing that beauty to just anybody who sees them. Not cool!

It’s tough to dress modestly right now because all the magazines, TV programs, movies, and store ads tell us that if you want to look cool, you have to show off your body. That’s a total lie! The girls and women I know who have the coolest personal style are the ones who choose not to show off their bodies.

Choosing to hide the deepest secrets of your beauty gives you an opportunity to set yourself apart and develop an awesome style all your own. Now take that info, grab your purse, and go shopping!

Girl Gab: Talk with your mom and establish guidelines for what is appropriate and what isn’t when you go shopping for clothes. Pray together before you go. Remember that your mom has the final say on what’s okay and what’s not. What a great opportunity to honor her!
