The Beatitudes—Thirsty?

Bible Blast: Read Psalm 107:1-9

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Matthew 5:6 (NIV)

Imagine that a dude named Mortimer is trudging through the desert. The sun is beating down on him, and sweat is pouring off his body. Suddenly Mortimer is filled with excitement and energy. He looks down into a valley and sees a lake of crystal-clear water. Mortimer runs toward it, anxious to drink until he can’t drink anymore. He jumps up in the air and dives into the water, only to find himself surrounded by sand. The refreshing lake was only a mirage.

A mirage is kind of a trick that your eyes play on you when they see the sun’s rays playing around with certain surfaces of the earth. You can “see” something that’s not really there. It usually happens in the desert or on the water.

The things the world offers for “satisfaction” are like a mirage. Say your family moves into a bigger house and you think, This will make me feel important, but eventually it’s just a house, and you don’t really care anymore. Maybe when you are a teenager, you’ll be feeling lonely and there’s a boy who tells you he “loves” you. You become his girlfriend and find out he’s not a nice boy at all. Those things are all mirages. They all may look as if they’ll satisfy you, but when you get close to them, you find they don’t measure up to your expectations, and your feelings of contentment don’t last.

When God fills you up, you’ll be satisfied and you’ll want more. He never breaks his promises, and he loves you more than anyone ever has or ever will. If you see an opportunity to learn more about God and become more like him, dive right in!
