That’s Blibber-Blubber!

Gum is so great. I love popping a piece of fresh mint gum in my mouth after eating a meal that was full of garlic and onions. In just a moment of time, the cool minty-ness just washes away the bad breath so people don’t drop over dead when I open my mouth to talk to them.

And don’t even get me started on bubble gum! Can you blow bubbles? Have you ever blown a bubble so big that when it popped you actually got some on your eyebrows? Awesome!

People have been chewing some sort of gum for, like, a really long time, but old-fashioned gum didn’t look like what we chew now. People used to take different types of tree sap, resin, or even wax, and chew it. Eventually, someone discovered the stuff could be made into chewing gum.

Frank Henry Fleer invented the first real bubble gum in 1906, but it didn’t really take off. He called it Blibber-Blubber. I think that’s such a great name! Can you imagine saying to your friend, “Hey, do you want a piece of Blibber-Blubber?” I grew up believing that if you swallowed gum, it would just sit in your stomach for about seven years. Have you ever heard that? That was always a kind of scary thing to think about. If you swallowed a lot of gum, how would there be room for anything else in your stomach?

Well, I’ve done a little research and found out that’s not true! In some really weird cases, gum can get caught on something else like nutshells and get stuck somewhere, but generally it passes through the body just like anything else you eat. It doesn’t get broken down and absorbed like food does, but it doesn’t set up a beach house in your tummy.

It’s important to know why we believe things. Like, if someone asked you why you believe Jesus is the only way to heaven, what would you tell that person? As you go through this devotional book, I hope you start to figure out why you believe what you believe.
