I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! Revelation 3:15

If someone is content, she is “satisfied with what one is or has; not wanting more or anything else.” In the book of Philippians, Paul talks about contentment. He says, “I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:11-13).

Godly contentment is being satisfied no matter what your circumstances. It’s not always wanting more stuff or a different life. It’s living for Christ in all situations. According to Paul, the main secret to contentment is relying on Christ’s strength, knowing you can’t do it without him.

There is a bad kind of contentment. It’s being satisfied to stay the same, without striving to become more like Jesus. If that applies to you, then you’ve asked Jesus into your heart but that’s all you really want to do. You’re not hot or cold. You’re lukewarm in your relationship with him.

Personally, if I have a drink I either want it to be ice cold or piping hot. If I forget and leave my hot tea on the counter and take a sip of it a half hour later, it’s not satisfying at all. I immediately stick the cup in the microwave and “nuke” it until it’s nice and steamy again.

The unbelievers in our world have a hard time finding refreshment in the life of a lukewarm Christian. They might see the truth in her life but wonder why she doesn’t really live it. Her lukewarm life is not very inspiring.

Every moment of the day, we’re choosing who or what we’re going to serve. Don’t be content just to float through life with Jesus in your heart. Decide today that you will be totally on fire for your King!
