Bible Blast: Read Song of Songs 6:8-10

Who is this, arising like the dawn, as fair as the moon, as bright as the sun, as majestic as an army with billowing banners?

Song of Songs 6:10

Do you know the story of Esther? It goes something like this: King Xerxes (most people pronounce that first X as a Z) was pretty lousy. He was totally into himself and got really angry if he thought anyone made him look foolish. Unfortunately for his wife, Queen Vashti, she didn’t obey him in front of a huge party he was having, and that didn’t go over very well. So he was done with her and began hunting for a new queen who would listen to him better.

King Xerxes’ people gathered a bunch of women from the city and brought them into the palace to be prepared to meet the king. Esther was one of those women. In order to be presented to the king, a girl first had to have some beauty treatments. You may be thinking the king’s beauty team took one afternoon to do the girls’ hair, nails, and makeup, put them in a new toga, and off they went to meet the king.

No. Not exactly.

Esther 2:12 says that before a girl was brought before the king, she had six months of beauty treatments with oils and six months of beauty treatments with perfumes and makeup! That’s an entire year of beauty treatments before she could even be with the king! That’s a serious “day at the spa”! It worked out well for Esther because she became queen and ended up saving all the Israelites from one of Xerxes’ foolish decisions.

Aren’t you glad you don’t have to take that long to get ready for a day at school? But you know what? As you get older and your body starts to change, it does become important to start washing your hair and body regularly. As you grow, your hair may start to get a little more oily, and your body will produce more sweat. Both of those things can produce an unattractive odor if you don’t wash up. God created your body, and his Spirit lives in you. Honor your Creator by taking care of yourself, all the while remembering that true beauty comes from having a real relationship with God.

Girl Gab: Mom, talk to your daughter about taking showers and baths and washing her hair. Does she need to clean her body more often? Is it time for her to start wearing underarm deodorant yet? Daughter, praise your heavenly Father today that you are growing up and becoming an amazing woman of God!
