One Hare-y Situation
One Hare-y Situation
Bible Blast: Read James 1:12-15
Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. James 1:14
Thomas Austin left England and moved to Australia. Before his move, he was really into hunting, and Australia didn’t have opportunities for the sport that he was used to. To solve the problem, he had twenty-four rabbits and some other animals sent from England so he could release them onto his property.
If you know anything about rabbits, you probably know that they produce baby rabbits very, very quickly. From the time a mama rabbit gets pregnant, it only takes about thirty days before the babies are born. A female rabbit can have up to fourteen babies at a time. So if a mama bunny is able to have a litter of babies once every month, and those babies can start having babies when they’re just a few months old, rabbits could take over the world!
Well, not really, but they sure began to take over Thomas Austin’s property in Australia. The twenty-four rabbits he had released multiplied so quickly that within ten years, people caught two million rabbits and still didn’t affect the population of those little guys. By 1950, there were about 600 million rabbits overtaking the area!
The rabbits have done serious damage to the land because of all their eating, especially to farmers’ crops. When Thomas Austin was asked about this, he said, “The introduction of a few rabbits could do little harm and might provide a touch of home, in addition to a spot of hunting.”
A lot of people feel the same way about sin. They think if they just let one little area of sin into their lives, they’ll be able to control it, but that isn’t the case. Just like verse 15 of the Bible Blast says, “These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.”
Giving into “little” sins leads to getting wrapped up in “bigger” sin.
You may think, It’s just a few rabbits, but those rabbits can lead to “destruction.”
Girl Gab: You can actually find photos of the large groups of rabbits in Australia and the severe damage they’ve done. Get your mom, and check it out online! Ask God to help you not to let sin into your life knowing you can’t control it.
