Meditation Moment: 1 Corinthians 13

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud.

1 Corinthians 13:4

Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope you got some really cool valentines from your friends. I used to love getting valentines—and giving them. I still have some of the ones that I received in first grade. Crazy, huh? But true love isn’t buying a box of thirty-two valentines for your classmates, is it? Though giving cards is a lot of fun, true love is much more difficult than that.

First Corinthians 13 is often called “The Love Chapter” because it teaches us so much about love. Verse four alone tells us five things about true love. It starts with patience. True love is patient. In the original language of the New Testament, it actually said something more like this: “Love is slow to boil.” What a powerful word picture! When our love is tested, we don’t just blow off steam like a pot of water about to whistle. Instead, we are “slow to boil.”

Okay, now that you’ve studied a little piece of 1 Corinthians 13:4 with me, go ahead and pray. Then, meditate on how love is patient, and wait for God to give you a story, picture, idea, or thought to write down.
