Lucy’s Question

Lucy’s Question

Bible Blast: Read Psalm 5:1-4

O LORD, hear me as I pray; pay attention to my groaning.

Psalm 5:1

Lucy had a zillion math problems to do for homework one night. She began her work at the kitchen table and got frustrated quickly.

“What’s wrong, honey?” her mom asked.

“I have all this work to do, and our teacher said our homework’s only supposed to take us thirty minutes, but tonight it’s definitely gonna take longer than that. I can’t focus, either, ” Lucy answered as her shoulders sagged.

“I’m really sorry, but sometimes that happens. Just start at the beginning and keep on going until it’s done. Why don’t you go work on them at the desk in your room where it’s quieter and less distracting?” asked her mom.

Lucy said, “Okay, but I’m not sure it’s gonna help.”

As she walked toward her room, her mom stopped her and said, “Lucy, have you prayed and asked God to help you focus on your work?”

“No,” she answered. “But I guess I will.”

About fifteen minutes later, Lucy cheerfully came out of her room because she had finished her math. Her mom gave her a hug and encouraged her. “Lucy, I’m so proud of you! Even though you didn’t want to do that work, you did it—and with a good attitude! That’s so great!”

“Thanks, Mom,” she said. “But how do you know if God is helping you?”

“Did you pray and ask him to help you?”

“Yeah,” Lucy said.

“Did you get it done and was it easier to focus?”

“Yeah,” Lucy said again.

Her mom said, “So wouldn’t you say God helped you?”

“Yeah, I guess he did,” Lucy answered.

“Sometimes God helps us in ways we can see and touch, and sometimes he helps us in ways we can feel. God heard your prayers, and he gave you the ability to focus, just like you asked,” her mom said warmly, and this made Lucy feel good.

Girl Gab: Did you know you can ask God for help with absolutely anything? Take time to pray now about something you need his help with.
