Just Stop Struggling
Just Stop Struggling
Bible Blast: Read Psalm 40:1-5
He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. Psalm 40:2
Quicksand is not something most of us encounter on a regular basis. Made of a little bit of sand and a little bit of salt water, quicksand looks like solid ground but acts like liquid. It can be very dangerous if you don’t know how to respond when you get close to it.
If I ever got stuck in quicksand, I’m pretty sure I would be tempted to freak out completely, floundering around in a panic. But the truth is, the more you struggle and move, the deeper the quicksand will take you. If you just remain calm, you will eventually float up to the top. Once you’ve floated up enough to have control of your arms and legs, you can very slowly and carefully crawl out of the miry muck. A friend could toss you a rope or stick to grab onto and help pull you out. This would take a lot of your energy and strength because the quicksand is very heavy, so afterward you might need to rest your legs before you could get up and start running around again.
When David wrote Psalm 40, he must have been going through some serious stuff! He said that the problems he was having were like being stuck in the mud and that God rescued him out of it, setting him back onto a place of safety. God even helped him walk as the strength in his legs returned.
If you find yourself going through hard times that make you feel “stuck,” don’t wiggle around and struggle, struggle, struggle to get out. Be still. Tell God how you feel about what’s going on and ask him to pull you out. Be patient. Some valuable lessons can be learned when we’re feeling stuck, and God’s timing is always perfect.
No quicksand is too strong or deep for our God!
